Part Six-By Any Means Necessary

As Billy Bob the Rescue Squad Chief help roll Sampson out the Lee Family home,he remark that
" everyone seems to have forgotten that Sampson was a WW2 hero with a purple heart".
He also reminded them that war was hell and that but for the grace of god there go I.
As the rescue wagon speed down highway 441 towards the hospital in Southport, the lee family piled into their 1952 chevy pickup to make the twenty mile trip to the hospital.

Part Five-By Any Means Necessary

Minny called out to Robert Lee to run across the highway to Mr.Bryant's house to have him call the rescue squad not everyone had a telephone ,Sampson was still breathing but was unresponsive.
As the rest of the clan stood and waited for the rescue squad to arrive, tears were streaming from the faces, the faint sounds of prayers could be heard "lord help us to hold out".
The wailing of the rescue siren could be heard coming down highway 441,in a small place such like Crackling,N.C. when the rescue squad is call the whole community responses
Sheriff Taylor and his deputy Wilbur were the first to arrive, neither were surprise to find Sampson in the condition he was in ,often they would bring him home from the Juke Joint on friday nights after a hard night of drinking moon shine and dancing.

Part Four-By Any Means Necessary

As Minny move about her small cramped kitchen preparing breakfast for her family the smell of country ham cooking on the wood burning stove had awaken everyone.
Clem the youngest son stood smiling in the kitchen with his mother as she hurried along making biscuits and girts for the morning meal.
This would be one of those rare but blessed morning for breakfast food, about this time of the year the meat from the curing barn was ready to be eaten, the one and only hog the family had was killed a few months earlier and now it was ready to be eaten.
All of a sudden Billy Jean the middle child came screaming into the kitchen for her mother, something had happen to Sampson!

Part Three-By Any Means Necessary

Patches the nickname the other kids had given Robert Lee because of the clothes he wore, didn't affect his spirit or drive to do better with his life.
Like clock work no matter what time of the year it was Robert Lee would be up at the crack of dawn to fed the chickens and bring in the fire wood.
He often would hear the faint prayers of his Mother asking the Lord to help her  to hold out, which he realized years later was the catalyst that motivated him to be the person he grew up to become.
One of his favorite prayers was to ask the Lord to do something about his father's condition, because his belief in God was strong,he knew from reading his worn and torned bible that Jesus had fed 5000 with two loaves of bread, surely he could save his dear father.
A belief in God was a strong reality in the Lee household, for without that belief, there would be none!

By Any Means Necessary-Part Two

Robert Atlas lee, the  towering oldest son of Sampson and Minny who stood six feet at a mire 14 years of age.,slowly arose from his pall-ate in the parlor room of the house.
The de facto man of the house Robert Lee took his role seriously,
It was his responsibility to bring in the fire wood for the wood burning heater each morning during the winter season.
Life in Crackling,N.C. could be brutal sometimes for the Lee family, with Sampson's mood swinging from happy and jovial to deep manic depression.
The family sometimes didn't know which way was up,with his swing in moods, their lives had been stolen by the bottle!
Robert Atlas often prayed and dreamed for his father to be like Uncle John who interacted with his cousins with a love he never could realize at this point in his young life.
But one lesson his young mind and spirit had learned through all of this was,you can't give what you ain't got!
After gathering the firewood and bringing the wood burning heater up to full max,Robert would go and awaken his sister Jenny Mae.
Jenny Mae was the brains of the family she would read every book that she could get her hands on,it was her relief from the demonic forces that permeated her young life.

By Any Means Necessary! Part One

I'm about to start a little mini-novel here on my blog site,I have titled it "By Any Means Necessary".
I'll try my best to base what I write on real experiences, belonging to either myself or people I know or have met, some will be  thoughts that are a little creative.
As Miss Minny move about in her small kitchen in the wee hours of this frosty December morning her six children slept snuggled and secure in their two bed room house on the outskirts of  Crackling,North Carolina.,rambling through the cabinets  which were bare and thin with things to fix for the morning meal.
Miss Minny always knew the Lord would make possible for another day!
You see Miss Minny's husband although he was alive and well and sleeping in the back room,he was dead in spirit and soul.
He couldn't keep a job for a lot of reasons, mainly because of his choice of hiding his pain in the bottle.
Sampson was a good man deep down inside, but Sampson never had any real training on how to be a father and husband, you see his own father had died when he was just a boy.
It was really hard for Sampson to give what he didn't have!
Just as Miss Minny was about to pull out the last box of grits from the cabinet a knock on the door stopped her,her brother John stop by on his way to work at the B&W factory,he had stopped at the local Piggly Wiggly and picked up a few things, for he knew the circumstances, and as Miss Minny knew the Lord would make a way some how!
Her brother John was a Pentecostal Minster and highly respected by most in this small farming community.
John had taken Sampson to the water many years ago,but backslide he did,he even got Sampson a job at the B&W,but he lost that job because of the bottle.
Yes folks was  it  was winter in Crackling,N.C. and the wind blowing off of the Atlantic Ocean five mile away was the clue.
Sampson's spirit was so broken that the fifty aces  that his mother had left him to farm for tobacco, now laid barren and unkempt.

Just What The Hell Did We Celebrate Yesterday

Ok even Skippy and Ray-Ray knew the date was July 4th yesterday, but did they know rhyme or reason why they were setting off hundreds of dollars worth of fireworks,in the middle of some of the most depressed neighborhoods here in Pittsburgh?
Just why in Jesus name would some of my co-workers who complain incessantly about not having enough money for this and that, refuse the chance to work and make double-time yesterday?
Just to party and get their head bad!
What I'm saying folks if we are going to celebrate and have parties on holidays,we must party with a purpose!
We must at least have a inkling of knowledge of what the history of the day we are celebrating connect with us culturally!
I believe if we had just that small bit of knowledge,we would re-think how we celebrate holidays!

And Further More!

Thursday Evening around dinner time one player of a  local (Gateway High School)  High School Football team  on their way to Florida for a Nike Football Camp, met the grime reaper at an early age.
The team had stopped in Durham ,N.C. for a overnight visit to Duke University. You can find the story by going to www.post-gazette.com ,a senseless killing of a young man trying to be as productive as he knew how.
When are we going to do something  to stop our young Black Men from dying at such a early age!

I Got Something To Say!

Many may not like or how I say things they are strictly my personal opinions, but do keep in mine that I love Black people to almost a fault.
It has occured to me that we go out of our way not to tell our love ones and friends the truth on issues they we maybe dealing with.
As a consequence the issue or problem grows, folks we can't afford to be willy nilly about issues that affect our lives.
Earlier this week I had a doctors appointment with my new primary care doctor,he's about 30 years old if that old.
But he went right for my jugular on the issue of my smoking cigarettes, folks I'm taking his advice and will make a HONEST EFFORT to quit this DIRTY,NASTY,FOUL HABIT.
So in keeping it REAL if I'm going to complain about  Skippy and Ray-Ray and their crew hanging out on the corner, then I must also get my own house in order.
My habit is just as bad as the heroin user, except mine is a legal addiction and because it's legal we tend to not see the real issues of it.

My Mind At Ease

Man when you start to live a honest and honorable life,it's hard to be shady in any of your dealing.
I'm not up for Sainthood yet,but it sure is hard to do the wrong thing in any of my dealing.
I have been in this "storm" called life for too long and I'm tired of being rained on by decisons I have made.
My umbrella is up folks and nobody is going to rain on the last mile of my parade,I'm marching this last mile with my head high and shoulders broad.

I Got Something To Say!

It's no accident that so many young people of color in the United States are confused and running wild.
And Lord knows I'm being mild in that description of many of these young folk.
When I pull out my track record as a young person growing up,it's not a pretty picture.
I don't want the young people I encounter today to travel the road I did.
So I feel it's my God given responsibility to give them guidance when and  wherever possible.
Many Men like myself aren't ready or able to take on this role of responsibility. WHY?
I surmise it's one factor, laziness! Mental and physical laziness flows throughout our community.
And it's not all our fault that this disease of laziness exist,we have been trained to be lazy.
We are given everything in our lives today, from unemployment payments to food stamps.
Our love ones support and enable our laziness by giving us things, instead of teaching us how to get it our selves.
It's time for the excuses to stop and for people to take charge of their existence,it's clear to me that nobody but God is going to help me out of any situation.
But God only help those who help themselves,so it time we all get up from the couch of excuses and get to stepping in the right direction.
It won't be easy in the beginning, but hang in there and watch as it gets easier.

Been In The Storm To Long!

There are so many umbrella's available out here in this world for us when we are walking in  life's storms.
Problem is so many of us(self included) refuse to open them up for use.
Selfishness, silly pride, self hatred, all remnants of slavery still keeps so many of us from reaching our God given potential.
We have been in this storm too long, how long are we going to continue to climb the rough side of this mountain,we call life?

It's Not By Accident

That things happen in our lives,we all want the dog, the  cat the beautiful man or woman, the house with the white picket fence.
But stuff happens in our lives, when we think it shouldn't!
But for me thats the time for me to step up even further to the plate.
When I don't want to step up to the plate thats when I know deep down within me that I need too.
It's a rewarding feeling to  have stepped up when you didn't have the mental or physical energy to do so,but you did anyway.

Yes Lord The Games People Play!

Congress people in Washington and politicians in general ,just  got  to be the lowest of the species we call human beings.
For the past week all I have seen and heard in the news is the back and forth between the Democrats and the Republicans leadership(aside from the daily slaughter going on in the streets of my neighborhood), about how not to let the Federal Government cease operating.
Well truth be told these folks had no intention of letting that happen,it was a game of who was going to say 'uncle" first.
This battle between the two dominant political parties in Washington wasn't about cutting the budget deficit, but about how to cut programs that help poor folk in general and women in particular.
If these Congress people truly wanted to cut the deficit in the Federal budget, all they had to do was go straight to the Military spending budget  pull out the switch blade and get to cutting.
It wasn't about lowering my taxes so I can afford name brand corn flakes, instead of Wal-Marts house brand,no it was about cutting off Pell Grants,so Skippy and Ray-Ray couldn't attend College and have a life instead of standing on the corner smoking a blunt.
This showdown on Capitol Hill folks was also about preventing poor women from having family planning resources and information,i.e. banning abortions.
The most important reason this showdown occurred is because of the political action and influence of the movement known as the "Tea Party".
Poor and working class people have better start to open their eyes and ears to these people, because the train they are driving doesn't stop in our neighborhoods!

God,Race,Christianity

Reading the title to this blog, might make you ask what the hell is going through this mans head this early in the morning.
Without any doubt I believe God is real,I just don't want God running certain things in my life, I just want God handling the big things  and leave the rest to me.
One of those things I can't seem to let go of  is giving other people the right to be!
One of the things about my personality is the inability at times to allow others to do their own thing.
That trait comes from my own experiences in life, not wanting to see others go down a path to nowhere or trouble.
Some how in today's culture many have been convinced that old folks experiences are not needed or welcome.
After reading another persons blog this morning who always seem to write about their church and activities,I began to question what Black person worships like this.
What happen to the Christianity  I enjoyed growing up?
You know the foot stomping spirit driving religion that made you feel like whatever it is on your plate of problems, there was a solution.
So many intelligent young Black folks have had their religion and spirits hijacked in my opinion.
Why are so many of our young dismissing the spirit of our ancestors for the spirit of the mega churchs and off beat paths of spirituality?

Good to be back

I have not written a blogspot for over three weeks and I still don't know what I'm going to say in this post.
But a few life changing situations have occurred with me and I still haven't fully digest them.
My father left his earthly life two weeks ago and it was a roller coaster ride for my family and me, it hasn't stop yet.
My father was the type of person who kept everything money wise close to the vest,so now my Mother and sibling are busy, trying to unravel everything financial involving him.
With me living in Pittsburgh and everyone else residing in the Washington,DC area it's a little difficult for me to do much on the phone.
But  what I have discovered about me during this period is an emotional side of me that is scary, scary because as a man I now realize how much I have bottled up or painted over emotionally over my life time.
I haven't completely figure out all of these emotional roller coasters of mine, but I'm ready for them.
I found myself crying on my way to work last week at 5am after putting in a CD of James Cleveland songs,he was one of gospel singers of my youth that I often heard around the house .
Good to be back and at least write something today!

Why Are Working Class Folk Not In The Street?

You know with the news coming out of different places around this country, about local and state governments laying off government workers, cutting their benefits, cutting their pay checks and pretty much screwing them left and right.
What is it about working stiffs that we can't see the collapse of our life styles and in turn our families?
Have we working class folks been so consumed with stuff and image that we can't see the forest for the trees?

In the District, struggling to deal with teen pregnancy

By Colbert I. King

Saturday, February 19, 2011;

She was 11 years old and pregnant. A preteen herself, the girl delivered the baby while under the supervision of child protective services, a clear sign of serious issues in her young life. The medical, psychological, social and emotional support she received, however, came by way of the Teen Alliance for Prepared Parenting (TAPP), a privately funded program created by the Washington Hospital Center to address a teen pregnancy problem that the District has been slow to confront.

Loral Patchen, director of the program, does not bury her head in the sand when it comes to teen pregnancies. Instead, she and her staff of social workers, youth development specialists and health counselors have buried themselves in the problem. I learned more about their work from Patchen and Washington Hospital Center Foundation officials this week.

Since 2001, the TAPP program has served 1,356 pregnant D.C. teens and teen mothers. These days, TAPP serves more than 300 new teen mothers and teen fathers each year - that is, if the latter get involved, which is rare. TAPP support includes helping the girls through their pregnancies with counseling, psychosocial and youth development services designed to prevent subsequent pregnancies, dropping out of school and a future of dependency.

Most of the girls TAPP serves are 16 or 17 years old (45 percent and 29 percent, respectively), when they enroll in the program, though 13 percent were 15 years old and 6 percent were 14 or younger. The program started enrolling 18-year-olds last fall as well.

Patchen estimates that 70 percent of the pregnant girls and teen mothers are students in D.C. public schools.

What else is known about these girls? More than 90 percent are African American or Latina. They live in wards of the city where poverty, drugs, guns, unemployment, incarceration and teen parenting are prevalent. The average age at which the girls reported first having intercourse was 14.6 years, and they averaged one sexual partner within the year before contacting TAPP.

One-fifth of the girls had been diagnosed with one or more sexually transmitted infections. One fifth also had been pregnant two or more times before enrollment, and 6 percent already had at least one child when they started with TAPP.

About 56 percent of them live in single-parent homes, 52 percent were born to teen mothers, and 40 percent have siblings who were also teen parents.

TAPP, which focuses on preventing additional pregnancies, appears to be making a dent in the problem. Only 8 percent of TAPP girls had another birth within 24 months after the first child, according to a study by the Office of Population Affairs in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Citywide, almost 18 percent of 15-to-18-year-old mothers had another child in 2007.

Let's be clear. TAPP provides a small window on the problem. Most pregnant D.C. teens don't use TAPP services. No one knows the full dimensions of the teen pregnancy problem - not the D.C. Health Department, the D.C. Public School system, the mayor or the D.C. Council. Not even the mothers and fathers of the girls and boys who are making the babies. The city's faith leaders also seem clueless.

We do know the consequences many of these young mothers and their children will face. Without an education and strong family support, low-income D.C. teens and their babies will confront a bleak future filled with barely the minimum to support their lives.

And we know of the other costs. Taxpayers must pick up the tab for food stamps, welfare, medical care, cribs, day-care vouchers, diapers and the like.

The city does manage a program for teen parents at Anacostia and Cardozo senior high schools that aims to influence graduation and attendance rates and prevent repeat pregnancies. But otherwise the District, as usual, is playing catch-up. A federal grant awarded to the city last fall will soon provide programming for pregnant and parenting students age 21 and younger. And the D.C. Health Department is establishing school-based health facilities at Anacostia, Ballou and Coolidge high schools, where care for students and their children are most needed.

But wait. Should the city's goal be to make pregnant teens better mothers? Or should it be to prevent teen pregnancy? Remember the 11-year-old mother!

Just Who Are We To Look At For Direction...........

in this life here in America,I mean all of the traditional sources of leadership in our community have seem to have gone the way of the Edsel.
Just who am I to look to when the burden of everyday life weights on my weary back?
Where are the fatherless and motherless children of today  to go to when the brutality of this American society reins down on their weary soul?Just Who!
Can they go next door to the teacher, lawyer or doctor in their community?
No they don't have that option anymore, integration has completely dismantled our community and been replace with stuff!
Media,Advertisements,Visa,MasterCard and disbursement of a grander life have replaced leadership in my community.
The ML K's,Malcolm X's,and Intellectuals have all been co-oped except for a few who are effectively marginalize to the sidelines of insanity.

Stepping Up to The Plate!

Last week I wrote about the bomb scare called into our local high school and the responses to that situation.
Thanks for all of your comments, they helped me to get to the point of taking action, yes we can scream and holler on these blogs till the cows come home.
Msdeb and my friend Stimpson's comments nailed  it for me and I'm not living in mouse-land anymore without a fight.
The school board meets this coming Monday at 7PM,yes it's a trick they know it's Valentine's Day and they know most people won't show.
Even though I usually rise early (3am) for work that's still not a reason not to be all up into the school boards kool-aid.
I'll keep you posted because this is the beginning of a change for our children and their future and for many adults!
